Travel agent who issued 700 students fake Canadian visas tracked down

The office of a travel agent who allegedly distributed fake documents to more than 700 students from India in Canada has been tracked down.

The Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) distributed deportation notices to the students who, according to reports, got their visas from Jalandhar-based Education Migration Services, run by Brijesh Mishra, who helped students with visa applications.

Jalandhar police confirmed they found the office of the travel agent, but it had been shut for the past six months.

The fabricated documents came to the attention of Canadian authorities when the students applied for permanent residency in the country. The students originally arrived in Canada between 2018 and 2022 on study visas.

When Canadian authorities discovered the ‘admission offer letters’ to be fraudulent the CBSA issued deportation letters to the students. The Canadian authorities allegedly reported that the students generated these offers to enter the country.

There were also reports that Mishra charged 1.6 million rupees (AUD$28,900) per student for the visa expenses, including admission fees, but excluding airfares and security deposits.

The students are claiming that they applied for these visas through Mishra, but they could not convince the CBSA because they could not substantiate the involvement of the agent in compiling and organising the fake documents.

“We have not yet got any complaint in this regard. But still we are verifying,” Jalandhar deputy commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Vatsala Gupta told reporters.

“We are still verifying and whenever we receive any complaint, we will take action,” she added.
