South Australian beach crowned best ‘hidden gem’ in the country

    Remote Stokes Bay Beach on Kangaroo Island in South Australia has been crowned Australia’s best ‘hidden gem’ – with 10.43 per cent of all reviews dubbing the destination a local wonder in a study by tour operator and software provider Bókun.

    Bókun examined more than 1,000 local destinations using Tripadvisor reviews containing the phrase ‘hidden gem’. This analysis reveals the best places to travel worldwide, according to real consumers.

    And Australia ranked eighth among countries with the most ‘Hidden Gem’ locations worldwide with a total of 10 attractions earning a place on the global list.

    Stokes Bay Beach ranked the best ‘hidden gem’ in Australia

    From all the destinations in Australia, Stokes Bay Beach was crowned the best ‘hidden gem’ in the country – with 10.43 per cent of all reviews coining the destination as a local wonder. SA also took out second place with Panorama Garden Estate at 7.58 per cent.

    Others on list included Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden in the Sydney Harbour suburb of Lavender Bay, Atherton Tablelands in Queensland and the Victoria State Library in Swanston St, Melbourne.

    England ranked as the No. 1 destination to uncover a hidden gem, with the country having a whopping 217 destinations on the global list, closely followed by the US with 203 locations.

    Upon analysing the data, it became apparent that gardens captured the hearts of tourists the most. Worldwide, locations categorised as “gardens” made up 14% of the world’s hidden gem locations. This was followed by speciality museums (12%), historic sites (11%), history museums (7%) and architectural buildings (6%).
