Exploring the endless mountains and rocky shorelines of Greenland and the Canadian Arctic with Silversea Cruises
Edited by Travel Weekly

Travel Weekly recently travelled from Reykjavik to Manitoba onboard the Silver Endeavour, enjoying unbridled luxury and the best of Greenland and the Canadian Arctic.

Throughout the voyage, guests explored some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world as they sailed for 17 days through rugged fjords, encountering wildlife in its raw beauty and natural habitats.

Check out some of our highlights from the trip below:

Day one gives cruisers to the chance to explore the city of Reykjavik, home to two-thirds of Iceland’s population and an artistic, creative atmosphere with an exciting culinary scene, hip bars and cosy cafes before beginning their journey.

Day four of the itinerary sees the Silver Endeavour arrive in Aappilattoq after sailing through the mesmerising Prince Christian Sound (Prins Christians Sund). Aappilattoq is a (very) small village of just 100 people which gets its title from the native name for sea anemone. From here, guests can choose from two included shore expeditions which involve a hike, village walk and church choir performance or an expedition with the Silversea Expedition Team.

Days at sea are a great opportunity to relax, unwind and spend time with with friends both new and old! Visit the spa or hit the gym, soak up the sun or keep lookout for whales on the deck, a ‘blue day’ at sea is the perfect balance to busy days spend exploring shoreside.

Travellers sail into Canada for the first time on day nine when the ship reaches Iqaluit, the capital of Canada’s newest territory, Nunavut or ‘our land’ in Inuktitut. The community is located at the heart of Frobisher Bay, an inlet of the North Atlantic and provides guests the chance opportunity to visit the  Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum and the Nunavut Legislative Assembly Building – both housing incredible collections of local art for sale.

Day 11 sails to Akpatok Island, a remote destination in the northernmost limits of the Labrador Peninsula sheer limestone cliffs that jut out of the icy waters below. In summer it’s favourite for polar bears as they wait for winter ice to form while in the winter months, the area is encased in snow and surrounding with sea ice, luring vast amounts of wildlife including the world’s largest population of breeding Thick-billed Murres.

As the journey draws to a close, and travellers arrive in Churchill, Manitoba, the final destination for the sailing. Here, guests can immerse themselves in the range of archaeological history or Churchill, gaining an understanding of the former presence of Pre-Dorset, Dorset and Inuit groups, with the earliest date going back some 4,000 years. There are also four shore expeditions to choose from; kayaking with the Belugas, Churchill Studies Centre learning experience, Zodiac Beluga whale and History For Prince of Wales, Ithaca Hike, meaning every explorer can tie a bow on their journey with a final memory making experience!
