Airline grounds flights after passengers fail to comply with coronavirus rules

Bangkok, Thailand - April 29 2018: A Lion Air airplane is parked on the runway at the airport. A safety cone stops people approaching the engine.

An Indonesian, low-cost carrier has suspended all passenger flights temporarily, in part because travellers did not follow the country’s COVID-19 health protocols.

In an online statement, Lion Air said the decision was based on an evaluation of flight operations, after “many passengers” were unable to fly because they had not completed the required documents and conditions during Indonesia’s pandemic alert period.

Passengers who had already purchased tickets were able to receive a full refund or change their ticket without fees, but for now, the airline’s stated goal is to prioritise the “physical and mental health conditions of all employees”.

The move was brought into effect on 5 June. However, in a statement three days’ later, Lion Air said it would resume operations from today.

As part of the Lion Air Group’s terms of flight, prospective passengers are required to comply with the following:

  • Arrive at least four hours at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport before flights.
  • Show a valid identification card (KTP or other ID).
  • Wear a face mask before flights, while on the plane until landing and on arrival and exit from the airport.
  • Wash hands with soap or use a hand sanitiser.
  • Follow social distancing rules in the airport terminal.
  • Maintain cleanliness while on board.
  • Follow the flight crew’s directions.
