STUDY: Air New Zealand’s ‘Skynest’ may increase mile-high encounters

As you may have heard, Air New Zealand unveiled its newest concept for economy class: the ‘Skynest‘.

It’s the first time we’ve seen a lie-flat bed in economy and we are obsessed!

But what he hadn’t considered, was that participants and wannabes of the mile-high club might have an entirely different reason to be jumping for joy at the news.

And somebody has already crunched the numbers to figure out just how likely it is that people will be engaging in hanky-panky on the new product.

Stratos Jet Charters has surveyed 2,000 people who fly at least once a year, including a few pilots and flight attendants, to find out what really happens up in the air.

Apparently, economy class is where all the action is happening, with 79.6 per cent of respondents claiming that’s where they did the deed.

With Skynest – which is specifically for coach passengers – there’s no doubt this will be a welcome addition. If you’ve been doing it in a chair, a bed must be a sight for sore eyes.

The next most popular answer to the question “If you have had a sexual encounter on a plane, where did it happen?” was the bathroom, with 25 per cent, followed by business class with 22.1 per cent, the aisle with 4 per cent, the galley with 2.8 per cent and the cockpit with 0.8 per cent.

Stratos Jet Charters estimates Skynest will account for 45 per cent of mile-high canoodling given current data and the additional privacy afforded to passengers.

The survey also revealed that fewer than 4 per cent have have had intercourse in the traditional sense, but 4.2 per cent have managed to have oral sex, 4.8 per cent have masturbated, 6.7 per cent have gotten “handsy below the belt”, 16.5 per cent have fondled someone and 40.6 per cent have kissed someone.

The Kiwi carrier has touted the Skynest as a “game-changer on so many levels” but we’re not sure this is what they had in mind.

At least, we hope not.
