Qantas cuts meals on intl flights

Qantas is reducing the number of meals it carries on some overnight international flights, which could result in some passengers missing out.

In a bid to reduce food wastage, the airline has put in place a 2% reduction in meals it carries on select flights, a move which has been in place since last month, according to a report in The Australian.

However, the cutbacks mean that on a fully packed A380 flight, around 10 passengers could miss out on a meal, the paper reports.

“We constantly monitor the catering requirements on our flights to make sure we are meeting our customers’ needs and minimising the amount of waste we throw away each day,” Philip Capps, Qantas’s head of customer product and service development, told the paper.

“Like most airlines, we make small adjustments to the catering depending on the time of day, duration of the flight and customer preference.”

According to the airline, after implementing the meal reductions there have been no negative impact to customers “as the airline provides alternative meals on flights where demand is unusually high,” the paper reports.

The move comes alongside Virgin Australia who reportedly are also implementing similar procedures.
