How best to spend frequent flyer points

So you have some frequent flyer points unused that are about to expire, but how do you know what options provides the best value?

Do you think getting a vacuum cleaner or Kitchen Aid this Christmas (as a gift for a loved one or yourself) for free provides the best deal to cash in your points? Guess again.

Booking a flight with your points can offer twice the value obtained by purchasing goods. Upgrading with points provided the best value overall.

finder.com.au crunched the numbers covering both Qantas and Virgin frequent flyer programs in Australia. They looked four different point reclamation methods and calculated the value return on 1,000 frequent flyer points. With most rewards cards on the market returning one point per dollar, this also equates to a $1,000 spend.

    1. use your Qantas ff pts on U.S. domestic flights or U.S. to Canada. If you connect at port of entry within 24 hours, there are no baggage fees, as the international baggage rules apply.
Flying from SFO to Vail Colorado, is incredibly expensive to buy tickets, but the same number of ff pts as if flying SFO to DEN, but Vail is 1000 times a better airport than Denver & closer to ski resorts. All the airport staff including the TSA are much less stressed as well & the rental cars are literally 50 metres from the terminal, not a 15 min bus ride away.
