Airport strikes continue, delays expected
Industrial action is expected to continue to cause delays at airports around the country today.
Travellers heading in and out of the country are again being warned to expect significant delays as airport custom workers walk off the job for a second day.
Immigration and Border Force staff will stop working for two hours at peak times on Tuesday morning and evening across eight Australian airports including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
According to Sky News, there have been reports of significant delays at Sydney, Perth and Cairns airports, Community and Public Sector Union national secretary Nadine Flood says.
“We’ve had reports from Sydney Airport of up to 500 people in the departures hall,” Flood told AAP on Monday.
“Staff who returned to work tell us there were delays of up to 90 minutes. That’s unfortunate, but these staff feel they have no option other than take more serious strike action.”
Per Sky News, Flood says Australian Border Force have flown in hundreds of managers around the country and put them up in hotels so they can do frontline work and cover the strike action.
“In our view, it would be a better use of everyone’s time to sit down and resolve this dispute, but that takes government coming to the table,” she said.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection is working closely with stakeholders to minimise the impact on the travelling public and on cargo and mail operations and is ensuring appropriate contingencies are in place for visa and citizenship services.
“We strongly encourage airline passengers to plan for potential delays and arrive at the airport even earlier over the next few weeks,” the Department said.
Protected industrial action is occurring as employees of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection vote on a proposed enterprise agreement. Notice has been given by the Community and Public Sector Union that the industrial action will continue after the vote concludes on September 21.
