Joyce wades into Sydney airport debate
Qantas has underlined its commitment to working with Sydney Airport to improve efficiency, but the airline’s boss Alan Joyce is convinced a second airport must be in place by 2030.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, chief executive Alan Joyce described the case for a second airport as "compelling".
"I think it's a national interest item," he said. "We fundamentally believe the airport is needed not only for the economy of Sydney and New South Wales, but for the Australian economy."
Joyce identified Badgery's Creek as Qantas's preferred location for the new facility.
While he asserted that Sydney Airport "operates very well" and that Qantas is coping well within the various constraints in place, he confirmed the airline is working with the airport to improve efficiencies.
"We are talking to Sydney Airport about the prospect of moving domestic and international operations together," he said. "We think it's a great project that will enhance customer experience significantly."
New generation aircraft with reduced noise and carbon emissions are also beneficial in the current arrangement, although Joyce is convinced they will have little impact on existing cap restrictions.
"I don't think there is the political will for the cap to change on either side of politics," he said.
However, optimisation of the existing arrangements remains a short-term fix in his view with Qantas "realistic" about the airport's limitations.
"That's why we need a second Sydney airport and we need it by about 2030," he said.
