Rex aircraft makes emergency landing in Melbourne following report of smoke

Rex Flight ZL31, operating Sydney to Melbourne landed safely late this morning after smoke was reported in the aft lavatory.

As an abundance of caution, the Captain declared an emergency.

The crew were able to isolate the problem by following standard operating procedures.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800NG, had 146 passengers on board all of whom disembarked normally once the aircraft had taxied to the gate.

Traveller Courtney Hudson was at the airport when the emergency took place and posted video on social media.

In it you can see a number of fire engines on the airport tarmac in the vicinity of a Rex Boeing 737 aircraft.

Rex Engineers have identified the cause of the smoke and rectified the problem.

The aircraft is now serviceable and will resume operations this afternoon.
