Greek tourism branch to reopen Down Under, but in a new location

Mykonos town at dusk.

The Aussie branch of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) is set to return Down Under, the Greek Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias and Australian Ambassador to Greece Arthur Spyrou announced on Tuesday in a joint statement.

Kikilias praised his collaboration with Spyrou, which he described as an “excellent partnership,” and added that he is “very happy that during his tenure we managed, with joint efforts, to reopen GNTO’s office – which was once in Sydney – now in Melbourne.”

Spyrou’s father was the director of GNTO’s Sydney office in the 1970s, which Kikilias noted.

“Australia is a very big market and we want it in Greece,” Kikilias added.

This summer season is looking to be huge for Aussies heading to Greece, as 340,000 Australians visited Greece in 2019 “and the trend is going up,” according to Spyrou.

While many Australians typically visit Acropolis and Plaka for the authentic Greek experience, activities like rock climbing and sea diving “are just as authentic an experience,” Spyrou noted.

“It is all these that have given a greater scope to the tourism of Greece, beyond the souvlaki and the sea. That is what an Australian will focus on, and that is what we will highlight with this effort.”
