Australian expedition ship, Ocean Explorer, runs aground in Greenland

The Ocean Explorer, a luxury expedition ship which is currently being leased by Australian outfit Aurora Expeditions has run aground in north-east Greenland.

On Tuesday, the Joint Arctic Command (JAC) Denmark posted a statement to its Facebook page that said 206 passengers and crew were onboard the ship.

There are no reported injuries onboard.

“A cruise ship in trouble in the national park is obviously a worry. The nearest help is far away, our units are far away, and the weather can be very unfavourable,” head of operations, JAC, Commander Brian Jensen, said in a statement.

“However, in this specific situation, we do not see any immediate danger to human life or the environment, which is reassuring.”

“As soon as we realized that the Ocean Explorer couldn’t get free on its own, we sent a ship … as soon as possible, we will also make a flyover so we can get fresh images to help assess the situation on-site.

“We have reached out to relevant partners in the operation area to investigate whether other units can have a shorter and faster route to the grounded ship.”

The Ocean Explorer may opt to wait until high tide with the hope the ship will be able to move freely, other options include assistance from a nearby cruise ship or wait for assistance from JAC services.
