Five cars wrecked in Sydney Airport fire

Fire and Rescue NSW investigators have deemed a Lithium-ion battery to be the cause of a fire that destroyed five vehicles at Sydney Airport around 8:30 pm last night.

Firefighters were called to a blaze in the parking lot on Airport Drive, Mascot, where a high-end electric vehicle was engulfed in flames and had spread to a further four motor vehicles.

It is believed the battery that sparked the fire had recently been detached from the car and stored in the lot and was quickly established as the cause of the blaze.

Aviation Rescue Firefighting Service and Fire and Rescue NSW worked together to extinguish the flames and prepare the scene for the Fire Investigation and Research Unit which will now lead on the investigation.

Fire and Rescue NSW’s Safety of Alternative and Renewable Energy Technologies team were also involved in inspecting the aftermath.

A spokesperson for Sydney Airport told Travel Weekly, “A parked vehicle caught fire on Monday night within the airport precinct, with the flames spreading to nearby vehicles”.

“Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service firefighters were first on scene and were joined by Fire and Rescue NSW crews to extinguish the flames.

“No one was injured during the incident and there was no impact to flights.”
