Asiana Airlines to weigh international passengers until the end of the month

Korean carrier, Asiana Airlines will weigh its international passengers until the end of the month as part of a data-gathering process for its international routes out of Seoul Gimpo Airport, its secondary hub.

In 2022, a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) study found the average weight of air travellers in 2021/22 was 73.6 kilograms.

Air Asiana will weigh both the passenger and their hand luggage at the same time and use the data to create updated calculations for its average passenger weight measurements.

While the process will be totally anonymous, travellers on the selected flights will not have an option as to whether or not they participate in the program.

As crazy and demeaning as it may sound, it’s a far more common practice than one may think with many airlines around the world using the same process to gather their own data sets.

Air New Zealand caused a stir when it announced it would begin a similar process last year, however, Air New Zealand load control improvement specialist Alastair James explained the balance and weight of the plane are key pieces of information the pilot/s need to be aware of before takeoff.

“We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft – from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold,” he said.

“For customers, crew and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we get from doing this survey.”
