Alan Joyce set to steal the show at Qantas’ 100th birthday celebrations

While Qantas will host its 100th birthday on Friday night in Sydney, it is speculated that CEO Alan Joyce will steal the show and announce his retirement at the event.

Joyce is set to collect a cool $24 million when he does step down from the top job that he has held for the last 15 years.

Qantas’ big night has a guest list of 1000 and includes chiefs of mining companies and banks, politicians as well as some members of staff who are being rewarded for their work through the COVID period.

However not all will celebrate Joyce’s tenure in the same style to those attending the black tie gala.

Many critics of the national carrier will remember the airlines $2.35 billion support package they received through the pandemic, including $860 million in JobKeeper payments.

Qantas this year posted a profit of $1 billion after tax, at the same time announcing rewards to staff of up to $11,500 in cash and shares, alongside another $500 staff travel credit.

“This is a huge turnaround considering the massive losses we were facing just 12 months ago,” Joyce said on the announcements in February this year.

“When we restructured the business at the start of COVID, it was to make sure we could bounce back quickly when travel returned. That’s effectively what’s happened, but it’s the strength of the demand that has driven such a strong result.”
