Amsterdam launches ad campaign to deter boozy, drugged up, sex hungry Brits

Officials in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam have unveiled a new campaign to discourage tourists from planning drug and alcohol-fuelled parties in the city – starting with young British men.

Known for its liberal views of drinking, marijuana and prostitution, Amsterdam has long attracted stag parties to the city, especially near the famed red light area where the city’s sex workers operate.

It’s estimated as many as a million Brits travel to the Dutch capital each year.

Called “Stay Away”, the campaign is aimed at people searching online for getaways in Amsterdam and receiving special warnings.

Amsterdam city council said in a statement: “The campaign will commence in Great Britain, aimed at males in the age category of 18 to 35 years.

“This online discouragement campaign is aimed at nuisance tourists who want to visit Amsterdam to ‘go wild’, with all the ensuing consequences.”

The campaign would then be expanded to “potential nuisance-causing visitors from the Netherlands and other EU countries” in the coming year, it said.

Anyone searching terms such as “stag party Amsterdam” or “pub crawl Amsterdam” will be shown the ads.

The ads would show the “risks and consequences of anti-social behaviour and excessive drug and alcohol abuse”, including fines, arrest, criminal records, hospitalisation and health issues.

Amsterdam has been working hard of late to try and improve its laddish/party image. It recently banned dope smoking in parts of the city and has curbed the trading hours of cannabis cafes, bars and sex clubs.

There are also plans to try and move its infamous red light district to the outskirts of the city.
