Travel Weekly recently stayed at the 1888 Hotel, here is what we thought:

First Impressions: 7/10

You could be forgiven for walking right past this boutique hotel – that is how well it fits in with the Pyrmont streetscape. This hotel is the creative happy medium between the Novotel Darling Harbour, and higher-range Darling Hotel. The reception is bright and has a living and luminous fig tree by the see-through lifts, what 1888 Hotel’s general manager terms the “heart” of the hotel.

Ambience: 8/10

The converted warehouse element is strong, with exposed brickwork, builder chalk marks, scraped paint and dark beam flourishes compared to what is otherwise minimalism. Time warp meets contemporary in this hotel. The furniture ranges from the 40’s to the 70’s while the fittings are modern and minimal. This puts more emphasis on the vintage pieces – from 60’s bureaus to 70’s gold velour lounges.

Accommodation: 8/10

Like a New York converted warehouse space, it’s so minimal that I found myself trying to clutter it up. I stayed in the Junior Suite, which was big enough to feel almost under-utilised. Every desk in the hotel is re-purposed wood taken from the original building, complete with character-filled dents. The bed is plush with a MicroCloud topper that is the same fabric as is used in the velvety dressing gowns.

Service: 8/10

It’s Australian service done right – conversational and relaxed. Check-in staff provides just enough information, directing you to the iPad for local details if you want more. The Barista makes chat with your cappuccino in the open-plan atrium eatery. The breakfast is a high-quality, health-conscious continental spread with cooked options averaging an extra ten dollars.

Facilities: 9/10

The Smart TV in the Junior Suite is very wide and almost 3D, making each TV program seemingly reach out of the screen. iPad’s come in every room, and are even set to control the air conditioning. The bathroom is like-new.

Overall: 80%

This is an ideal bolt-hole for travellers who want to dip in and out of the city, retiring to a designer hotel that feels like authentic and stylish city living.
