South African Airways (SAA) has taken delivery of its first two A320 aircraft in a move it said will raise the quality of its African operations. The carrier has a further 18 A320 on order.

"Our passengers from Australia and New Zealand want the same standard and quality of aircraft they receive on international sectors," SAA Australasia country manager Tim Clyde-Smith said. "The new A320s will help deliver that demand."

The first quarter of the 2013/14 financial year saw Singapore Airlines' groupwide net profits rise 56% year on year to hit $122 million, largely due to a $336 million net gain from the sale of its stake in Virgin Atlantic to Delta Air Lines.

Group revenue rose 1.7% to $3,840 million largely due to settlements related to changes in aircraft delivery slots.
