Aussie travelers come second only to those in Saudi Arabia when it comes to travel expenditure, according to a new survey.

The latest Visa Global Travel Intentions Survey found that Aussies fork out an average $4265 on each trip – roughly twice the Asia Pacific average of $1980 and considerably more than the global figure of $2475.

That spend is set to rise, with Australian travelers expecting to spend an average 9% more on their next trip, according to the survey of 12,631 people from 25 countries.

The number of Australians actually taking trips also far exceeds regional averages. Over the last two years, 98% of Australians have made leisure trips overseas, compared with 77% in Asia Pacific and 79% worldwide.

“The results of the survey are encouraging in that they show international travel to be a priority which may hint to the strength of the Australian dollar,” Visa Australia country manager, Vipin Kalra, said.

“Not only are Australians some of the world’s heaviest spenders on international travel, they also plan to increase their spend on their next trip overseas.”

Australians also travel for longer, with 75% of all trips for seven days or more, with the research revealing a preference for independent travel over packaged tours.

“The study shows that Australians love lengthy, long-haul, free and independent travel,” Kalra said.

The US and New Zealand were revealed as the most popular destinations for Aussies, with each destination accounting for 21% of Australian trips over the last two years. Singapore, the UK and Thailand followed close behind with 20%, 18% and 16% respectively.

Over the next year, 11% of Australians plan to visit the US, while 10% are eyeing New Zealand and 8% will head for the UK.
