Interpol asked to track down comedian who joked about MH370

Malaysian officials have filed an application with Interpol to track down a New York-based comedian who made a joke about MH370.

Malaysian national police chief Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani confirmed the authorities had requested her full identity and her latest location.

Jocelyn Chia is a former lawyer, now comedian originally from Singapore.

In a video posted to social media, Chia jokes about the flight which went missing in March 2014 with 239 people on board. The aircraft has never been found.

Her routine spoke of the rivalry between Singapore and Malaysia which she called a “developing” nation, saying its aircraft cannot fly.

The beginning of the joke didn’t go so well, but it was a two-parter.

“Malaysian Airlines going missing not funny huh? Some jokes don’t land.”

A video of the joke was removed by TikTok for violating its hate-speech guidelines.

Chia told CNN she’s performed the joke more than 100 times and has never had a problem before. She said she stands by the joke and that it had been taken out of context.

Since the outrage unfolded, the comedian has doubled down on her response to the criticism she’s received.

She retweeted one message saying “If they’re as good at finding people as they are at finding planes, you’ll be fine.”

And, “Now every woman in SE Asia named Jocelyn Chia knows what it’s like to be named Karen in America.”
