Singapore Changi Airport titled world’s best in Skytrax awards

Jewel Changi Airport, Singapore - 5th August, 2019: Visitors tour around the Rain Vortex inside the Jewel area at Changi Airport. It's the world's tallest waterfall at 130 ft in height and surrounded by a four-storey terraced forest. The Jewel complex and waterfall was designed by Moshe Safdie.

The world’s best airport has been revealed at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2023 and just like the headline states, Singapore Changi Airport took the gold.

Skytrax, the US-based airline and airport review and ranking site, compiled its list by surveying travellers from around the globe and asked them to rate airport experience – from check-in to departures and all that comes in between.

Singapore Changi Airport took the top spot eight years in a row, but fell out of form in 2021 and 2022 as the pandemic made its impact. Hamad International Airport in Doha snagged the opportunity and became top dog.

But things haven’t gone quite as planned for Hamad this year, as the Qatar-based airport fell back to number two

“This recognition is great encouragement to our airport community, who stood firmly together to battle the challenges of COVID-19 over the past two years,” CEO of Changi Airport Group, Lee Seow Hiang said.

As per Australian airports, Melbourne Airport scored the number one spot, coming in at 19th worldwide, jumping seven spots from its 2022 ranking.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said the awards recognised the significant investment the airport had made in terminal facilities, airfield infrastructure and staff training over the past 12 months.

“Customer service is at the heart of what we do, and we’re incredibly proud of the work our team puts in to give our passengers the best experience they can,” Argus said.

Brisbane wasn’t too far behind Melbourne at 23rd, followed by Sydney at 49th – which suffered a drop by eight places from its 2022 level.

Gold Coast jumped nearly 30 spots to place at 54th, followed by Perth close behind at 58th and Adelaide came in at 73rd.

Kiwi airports to snag a spot in the top 100 were Auckland at 51 and Christchurch rounded out the list at an even 100.
