Watch: The delivery of the last ever Boeing 747 in Seattle

If ever there was proof of the old adage that good things come to an end, then it was Wednesday morning at Boeing’s factory in Seattle.

The final ever Boeing 747 aircraft was delivered to its customer, Atlas Air.

The iconic aircraft has been synonymous with travel for decades. And, chances are we’ve all flown on one given there were 1,574 built since the first one took to the skies in 1969.

The delivery of the final 747 aircraft was celebrated by thousands of current and former employees of Boeing, as well as some of the aircraft’s biggest customers such as Lufthansa.

The so-called “Queen of the Skies” was unveiled by John Travlota, a long time fan of aircraft, especially Boeing.

Qantas ordered four of the Boeing 747-200s in 1967. For context, that’s the same year the airline changed its name from Qantas Empire Airways to Qantas Airways Ltd.

The first of those flew in 1971.

The aircraft was also ingrained in the image of Pan Am, who used the aircraft for its marketing for years.

With the focus of the travel industry now on sustainability and fuel efficiency, the Boeing 747 has become less and less economic compared to its sister aircraft such as the Boeing 777 or Dreamliners. So, due to a lack of orders for the latest Boeing 747-8, the company decided to end production of the old queen.
