Disney Cruise Line acquires unfinished Dream Cruises ship

Disney Cruise Line has acquired Global Dream, Dream Cruises’ unfinished ship designed for the family market.

The ship will be renamed and reimagined by Walt Disney Imagineers ahead of its inaugural sailing in 2025.

Currently under construction at MV Werften, Global Dream was set to be the largest cruise ship by passenger volume.

Disney Cruise Line expects to base the renamed Global Dream outside the United States, travelling to “new global destinations”, and it will feature innovative Disney experiences including signature entertainment, rotational dining, and the impeccable guest service that sets Disney Cruise Line apart.

The exterior will be adorned in the iconic Mickey Mouse-inspired colours of the fleet, complete with signature red funnels.

The 208,000-gross-ton ship is expected to be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest-emission fuels available, with an expected passenger capacity of around 6,000 with 2,300 crew members.

“Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, experiences, and products.

Construction will be completed at the former MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, under the management of Meyer Werft, the Papenburg-based company that built the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish.

The project also secures employment for hundreds of former MV Werften employees and will provide opportunities for numerous regional maritime industry suppliers.

Dream Cruises’ parent company Genting Hong Kong collapsed in early 2022 suspending cruise operations for both Dream Cruises and Crystal Cruises.

More details about the maiden voyage, itineraries, and onboard experiences will be announced at a later date.’

Disney Crusie Line will make its debut on Aussie shores next year for a limited season of special sailings aboard the Disney Wonder.
