Contiki achieves carbon neutral goal, announces brand refresh

Contiki has achieved its goal of carbon neutrality and announced a refocusing of its brand philosophy to “Travel. Together.”

Contiki announced its Carbon Action Plan on Earth Day in April 2021 and recognised the need for both travellers and travel businesses to take action on climate change and address greenhouse gas emissions.

All Contiki trips from 2022 will be carbon neutral and the cost to offset every trip will be covered by the social youth travel company.

“Contiki trips are intelligently designed to be 100% carbon neutral but sacrifice none of the fun or wonderful experiences to achieve this,” said Tasha Hayes, Contiki’s sustainability officer.

“We know that sustainability is incredibly important to our travellers, but so is a complete travel experience and having a great time.”

Carbon neutrality is part of Contiki’s five-point Climate Action Plan, ‘How We Tread Right,’ which is in The Travel Corporation’s sustainability strategy.

Since 2015, Contiki has invested in energy conservation, offered lower emission vegan and vegetarian meals, alongside lower carbon footprint ‘by rail’ itineraries.

Contiki’s brand refresh to “Travel. Together” is a bold evolution of its brand identity and was inspired by the pandemic’s impact on travel, said Contiki’s chief marketing officer Simon Llanos.

“One thing the pandemic brought into significant focus was the importance of our global community. Even when we were locked down in our homes, we were still connecting, still dreaming about travel, and co-creating some inspirational content with our travelers and partners,” Llanos said.

“Even when we couldn’t travel, those special social bonds that are made on a Contiki trip endured – and that is truly unique to us.

“So for 2022 and beyond, we live by our brand philosophy of ‘Travel.Together.’ which means to travel with one another, the cultures we enjoy, and the environment, too,” Llanos concluded.
