Shocking video shows Ryanair plane’s engine on fire after flock of herons get sucked in

A shocking video shows flames emerging from a Ryanair plane’s engine after it collided with a flock of herons while landing at an airport in Italy.

Flight FR1194 was arriving in Bologna Italy at around 11:30pm when the long-legged, long-necked birds were sucked into the aircraft’s engine, and others were spattered across the cockpit windscreen, according to the Independent.

Despite the pilot’s view being obscured by the splattering debris, they managed to land the aircraft safely, with no injuries to crew members or passengers.

The video footage, posted by the Breaking Aviation News & Videos’ Twitter account shows sparks shooting out one of the right engines as the Boeing 787-800 descended.

Gruesome images of heron carcasses scattered across the plane’s exterior were also posted by the Twitter account.

Marconi airport staff had the unfortunate job of cleaning the plane of dead birds after landing.

Bird strikes are a real threat to the safety and state of a plane, with the collisions most commonly occurring shortly after take-offs and before landings.

They cost airlines over $US1 billion a year in damage and delays.

In October, another Ryanair flight that flew from Manchester Airport en route to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, was forced to make an emergency landing in Liverpool after a bird hit the engine, making a noise that “sounded more like a motorboat or a propeller engine,” according to one passenger.

“The aircraft landed normally and customers were transferred to a replacement aircraft which departed to Lanzarote following a short delay of approximately one hour,” an airline spokesperson said at the time.
