South Australia to go into lockdown, Victoria’s extended by another week
South Australian Premier Steven Marshall has announced the state will enter a seven-day lockdown from 6pm tonight.
The lockdown is in response to the growing COVID-19 outbreak in South Australia, which has now been confirmed as being of the Delta variety, with the number of cases linked to the current cluster now at five.
“We hate putting these restrictions in place, but we believe we have one chance to get this right,” Marshall said at a press conference this morning.
“We have no alternative but to impose some fairly heavy and immediate restrictions to come in – at 6pm tonight, South Australia moves into lockdown.”
There are only five reasons allowing people to leave their homes in SA: to buy essential items, for essential work, to exercise with others in the same household, to provide care for someone else, and healthcare (which includes COVID-19 testing and vaccination).
Meanwhile, the Victorian government has extended the state’s current lockdown until midnight on Tuesday 27 July, and will temporarily halt travel to Victoria using red zone permits.
