Destination NSW enlists drag queens and shirtless life guards to welcome back Victorians

DNSW MELB-SYD Flight Activation to celebrate VIC border Reopening.

Sydney rolled out the welcome mat in spectacular style yesterday morning to passengers and crew arriving on Qantas flights from Melbourne into Sydney Airport.

Arrival gates were taken over with a welcome committee of drag queens and Bondi life guards, who handed out Nutie doughnuts and Toby’s Estate coffee cards as John Sebastian’s 1976 hit “Welcome Back” and Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration” blared out over the Sydney Airport PA.

Among the arrivals were radio presenters Dave “Hughesy” Hughes and Ed Kavalee from the Hit Network, along with American actor Adrian Grenier.

The activation – a collaboration between Destination NSW, Qantas and Sydney Airport – supports the tourism board’s interstate ‘Great Escape’ marketing campaign, which encourages Victorians to hop the fence and explore the coast, countryside and outback of NSW now that the border between the two states has been reopened.
