33 passengers injured, including tourists in Paris–London bus crash

A Flixbus tourist vehicle has overturned after skidding off a highway in Northern France, injuring 33 people.

According to the Associated Press, on Sunday (local time) a bus travelling from Paris to London overturned after slipping off a highway in the Somme region of France.

The bus was carrying 33 passengers from nine countries, including Australia. Of those on board, 29 reportedly sustained light injuries and four were seriously hurt, according to a statement from the Somme prefecture, cited by the Associated Press.

The fire brigade, however, puts the number of seriously injured at five.

According to ABC News, eleven of the passengers were French and 22 were foreign nationals. These include 10 travellers from Britain, five from the United States, two from Romania, and one each from Spain, Australia, Mauritius, Japan and Sri Lanka.

The injured were taken to Amiens Hospital and several other regional facilities, according to the Somme prefecture’s statement, as reported by the Associated Press.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed to Travel Weekly that it is currently providing consular assistance to an Australian man “following a bus crash in France”.

For privacy reasons, the Department was unable to provide any further details.

Flixbus, a German-based company operating low-cost bus services across Europe, told ABC News in a statement that it was in “close contact with local authorities to determine the exact causes of the accident, and to take care of the passengers”.

On Twitter, the Gendarmerie of Somme tweeted an image of the bus on its side, with the front of the vehicle seemingly torn from its body and emergency personnel on the scene.
