WATCH: Dozens hospitalised after freak artificial wave at Chinese water park

More than 40 people have reportedly been injured after a malfunctioning wave machine at a Chinese water park created a freak wave.

Multiple media outlets have reported that more than 40 people were left injured on Monday at Yulongshuiyun Water Park in the city of Longjing, after a wave machine malfunctioned.

In footage widely aired on Twitter, tourists can be seen swimming and floating in pool rings when, from the far end of the pool, a massive wave rises breaking atop dozens of swimmers and carrying others across the pool.

The photographer and others standing away from the water, behind a barrier, run as the wave approaches.

The original footage has been viewed more than 13 million times since it came to light.

A spokesperson for the water park has been reported as stating the freak wave was caused by a “malfunction” in the wave pool’s control room, resulting in waves bigger than designed, according to news.com.au.

“The wave pool was closed for a day for repairs,” the spokesperson said. “It’s already been fixed and will be open tomorrow.”

The spokesperson claimed as few as 10 people had been hurt, while officials said the total number of injured was much higher.

Local authorities told The Straits Times on Wednesday that a “total of 44 tourists” were injured and hospitalised as a result of the accident.
