Instagram implements ‘warning system’ after tourist death at popular Aussie cliff

Instagram is issuing warnings to tourists visiting Western Australia’s The Gap near Albany, after a 20-year-old tourist plunged to his death last week.

The man named Ankit was apparently outside of the barricaded area when the accident took place.

The cliff face, which has a 40-metre drop into the ocean below, is a popular site for tourists looking to take daring Instagram photos.

The warning will appear to those within a geographical radius of the cliff, similar to the warnings issued to visitors of NSW’s Figure 8 Pools south of Sydney.

Allianz Insurance is also warning tourists of taking “selfies” in dangerous areas, addressing the dangerous behaviour on its online site.

“In the quest for the selfie to beat all selfies, some people go too far,” Allianz states on its website.

“Often the acts are dangerous, stupid and sometimes painful.”

According to the ABC, an investigation into Ankit’s death would be carried out by Great Southern Police District Superintendent Dom Wood, with possible safety warnings being addressed as part of the investigation.

“We know that they were on the eastern side of The Gap,” Wood said.

“They weren’t actually on the viewing platform, they were on the rocks with no protection whatsoever.”

“We all know now there is a bit of a selfie culture and there’s a culture of people wanting to take as many snaps as they can,” he said.

“Potentially people will put that activity ahead of their own safety.

“The message I would say … is stop, pause and think about what you’re doing. Put safety first,” he added.
