There’s no doubt about it, Scotland is famous for scenery – from its towering castles to its rugged cliffs and mountains, Scotland sightseeing is iconic.

Don’t know where to start? Luckily, VisitScotland has put together a list of the 11 best snap-worthy sites around – perfect for snapping that perfect Instagram selfie.

  1. Torridon, North Highlands

Drive an hour east from Inverness along the spectacular North Coast 500 route until you reach the breathtaking, mirror-like Loch Torridon, surrounded by lush mountains.

Snap a selfie on the rocky loch shore or from the foot of the Beinn Eighe Mountain for a truly memorable, out-of-this-world shot.

  1. Dunnottar Castle, Aberdeenshire

Known today as the inspiration behind Disney Pixar’s animated movie Brave, the clifftop ruins of Dunnottar Castle, along the dramatic Aberdeenshire coast, are truly the stuff of cinematographers’ (and photographers’) dreams.

Visitors can slot themselves into a snap taken from just beyond the entrance gate, where they can capture the ruins, the ocean and even some birdlife all at once.

  1. Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh

Instantly recognisable all over the world, Edinburgh Castle towers over the city and is its number one attraction – with good reason.

Take a shot from the top of the castle walls (and the world), looking down over the city’s gothic skyline, or snap a selfie from down below in the cobble-stoned Grassmarket with the captivating castle looming in the background.

  1. Scott’s View, Scottish Borders

Rustic and romantic, Scott’s View is a favourite with picnickers and couples, because of its panoramic, picturesque view over the Eildon Hills and the River Tweed valley.

Early risers can take a snap of the morning sun and slap it on a postcard home – making everyone extra jealous.

  1. Urquhart Castle, beside Loch Ness in Highlands

The magnificent Urquhart Castle is an icon in Inverness, and sits on the banks of Loch Ness (yes, where you can try and catch a glimse of the infamous Loch “Nessie” Ness monster).

The castle has a history rich in royalty and ruin – and is surrounded by postcard-worthy scenery. What more could you want in a photo?

  1. Glen Coe Mountains, Scottish Highlands

Glen Coe is one of the most recognised valleys in Scotland, and is surrounded by almost unreal beauty. Surrounded by looming mountains, waterfalls and little streams it truly is one the best spots for a photograph.

It’s also the place where Hogwarts is located in the Harry Potter movies. Sit at the glens mouth or venture in and walk at the base of the mountain Bidean nam Bian.

It will be unlike any selfie you’ve ever taken.

  1. Corpach Sea, Fort William

An industrial-style village at the entrance to the Caledonian Canal and on the outskirts of the famous Fort William, Corpach is the gateway to the road to the Isles.

A picture of this off-the-beaten-track spot perfectly reflects the industrial spirit and seafaring history of Scotland, and can’t be missed.

  1. Loch Ness, Scottish Highlands

How could you not take a selfie at the world’s most famous loch? This 23-mile lake offers scenic views all the way around – perfect for photo opportunities.

Whether it’s from the banks of Dores beach or a water tour over the deep blue water, you’re sure to get a spectacular shot. You might even snap Nessie!

  1. Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat (Salisbury Crags), Edinburgh

Grab your hiking boots, because this hill is worth the climb. For the ultimate view of Edinburgh climb on up to Arthur’s Seat, an ancient volcanic feature with views all the way to the Kingdom of Fife.

Located in the heart of the city, any photo you take is guaranteed to look amazing.

  1. Atop Ben Nevis, Scottish Highlands

Travellers who hike to the UK’s highest peak well and truly deserve the selfie they’ll get at the top, with views that can stretch for over 100 kilometers.

If hiking isn’t your thing, then hop onto Britain’s only mountain gondola that goes up the slopes of Aonach Mor to the Snowgoose Restaurant or the Pinemarten Café for a snap and a snack – without the backpack or blisters.

On the Isle of Skye lies the enchanting Fairy Pools: crystal clear blue pools of the River Brittle. These famous pools entice visitors from all over the world, and they make some great wild swimming for those brave enough to enter the cold water.

For the less adventurous these magical Fairy Pools look amazing in photos (but not as good as in real life).

You can stand at the very bottom of the river, looking up at the massive black Cullin Mountain and the glistening pools.
