7 Must-dos in Melbourne

Planning a trip to Melbourne? Here are seven must-do things to complete it.

Melbourne is one of the most visited cities in Australia, and for good reason. There is so much to see and do here that you’ll be spoilt for choice – and you might struggle to decide what to do in your short time there.

We have picked out the 7 things you must do when you visit Melbourne!

1. Phillip Island Penguin Parade

Little penguins are so-called because they are the smallest species of penguin in the world, which just makes this encounter all the more precious. They call it a parade because every day, as the sun goes down, the penguins return from the water to their homes further inland.

They waddle past in great numbers, and you can stand by the side and watch them all go home! The island also offers other delights, such as a large colony of fur seals.

2. Eureka Skydeck

If you have vertigo, look away now! The Skydeck is the highest viewing platform in the entire southern hemisphere, with a 360-degree view of Melbourne from above.

It’s a crazy experience to go out into the glass cube and look around at the city far beneath your feet. Kids are permitted to try it out too, so this is a great adventure for the fearless family!

3. Werribee Open Range Zoo

Rather than going to a zoo where the animals are kept in cages, go just 30 minutes outside of the CBD to visit this safari park. The open zoo allows you to go on a bus tour ride through the habitats of all the different animals, which include rhinos, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and antelopes.

It’s free for children under the age of 16 to come in during school holidays, so check ahead for the Melbourne holiday dates.

4. Cruises

Melbourne has a river and a very busy port, so it stands to reason that you can explore the area further by water. Whether you choose just to go along the river and back, or out for a longer trip – for example, a cruise to a different city – is down to you.

You can guarantee that you’ll have a lot of fun, whichever way you choose to go. Opt for a cruise that includes dinner or lunch for an even more special experience.

5. Neighbours Tour

Everyone knows about Neighbours, the long-running soap that’s one of Australia’s best-known exports. If you want to see the set, you can take the official tour of the real-life Ramsay Street, where all of the exteriors are filmed.

You might even get lucky and see some of the actors walking around!

6. The Block Arcade

Full of shops for you to explore, the Block Arcade is one of the best areas for a wander around. It is also jam-packed with cafes and restaurants, including some businesses that have been there for over 100 years.

You can’t miss this lively shopping mall area, and the covered walkways mean that you can enjoy it whatever the weather.

7. Melbourne Museum

A great experience for both kids and grown-ups, the Melbourne Museum tells the story of this region of Australia and the settlements that have gone before. It also explores more general world history, with great features such as dinosaur skeletons that will delight everyone. It’s a great learning experience as well as a place to marvel at the exhibitions.

When you come to Melbourne, make sure you get these 7 things on your itinerary. It’s enough to do one every day for a whole week – and there’s plenty more to explore besides!
