How to sneak an extra holiday in this year

InsureandGo know how Australians can maximise the public holidays in 2017 for their next holiday getaway

Ahead of the Easter holidays online travel insurance provider InsureandGo, has reviewed this year’s public holiday dates to help Australians take longer breaks while using fewer annual days.

With the Easter weekend and Anzac Day so close together, Australians can get 17 days off while only using seven days of annual leave if they take off Friday 14 April until Friday 28 April. For those looking for a shorter trip, they can use five days of leave in order to get almost two weeks off if they take off Friday 14 April until Wednesday 26 April.

Jonathan Etkind, Commercial Manager of InsureandGo said: “Public holidays come around very quickly, and it’s easy to miss out on booking in a trip if you leave it too late. With the Easter holidays fast approaching, now is the time to start locking in your travel plans.

“It’s also a great opportunity to travel to overseas destinations like Asia or Europe, where Australians can often lose at least a day or two travelling. If people are travelling overseas, it’s important that they protect themselves with travel insurance,” said Etkind.

People might not be aware of the cost of medical procedures in different parts of the world; for example, we have experienced medical claims of over $300,000 in Asia and $200,000 in Europe”.

After the Easter break, InsureandGo found that the best dates to travel are:

For New South Wales residents: Saturday 3 June until Monday 12 June (Queen’s Birthday) – take four days of annual leave and get 10 days off.

For Victorian residents: Saturday 4 November until Tuesday 6 November (Melbourne Cup Day) – take one day of annual leave and get four days off.

For Brisbane residents: Saturday 12 August until Sunday 20 August (Ekka Day) – take four days of annual leave and get nine days off.

For ACT residents: Saturday 23 September until Monday 2 October (Family and Community Day and Labour Day) – take four days of annual leave and get 10 days off.

Before booking any type of international or domestic getaway, Mr Etkind recommends that all Australians do their research and consider a travel insurance policy that best suits their needs.

“New Zealand is an incredibly popular destination for Australian travellers due to its close proximity and range of activities on offer. But if you do make a trip over the Tasman for an adventure getaway, be sure to check for a policy that provides cover for activities like bungee jumping and skydiving that are popular in that part of the world.

InsureandGo offers a range of policies that cover domestic travel, cruising, winter sports, family holidays, backpacking, seniors and pre-existing medical conditions.
