Ryokans ramping up in Australia

Ryokans ramping up in Australia

The Ryokan Collection, a portfolio of 32 traditional Japanese ryokan stays, is on a trade mission to Australia this week.

The roadshow is focused on three of their ryokan properties, from across Japan, which specialise in authentic experiences and stays.

The mission is off the back of Japan’s increased focus on American, European and Australian markets.

In this six months from January to July, Australian visitation to The Ryokan Collection properties have increased by 22% compared to 2015.

Australia represents the fifth largest market.

During their mission, delegates reported that luxury travel agents said demand was high for the ryokan experience among their clients.

New initiatives for clients include a loyalty program, with guests who stay ten times receiving a complimentary stay.

Each of the 32 boutique stays offer premium items created by local artisans and curated by the ryokans. Specialties include lacquerware, sake, pottery and fabrics akin to the kimono.

“This is not to retail gifts but to project the historical context of each ryokan,” The Ryokan Collection marketing manager Hiroyuki Miyatake said.

Representatives from Ryokan Kurashiki in the Bikan historical quarter, Kifu No Sato in Okayama Prefecture and Yamo no Chaya in Hakone will visit luxury travel agents and media this week.
