Time running out for MH370 relatives to file claims

Malaysia Airlines has urged relatives of those aboard ill-fated flight MH370 to file their claims by March 8, the end of the two-year period for next of kin to preserve their legal rights to compensation.

The airline said the two-year limitation period to lodge compensation claims is stipulated under the Montreal Convention, which establishes airline liability in the case of death or injury.

The Beijing-bound flight MH370, with 239 people on board including six Australians, disappeared without a trace about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport on March 8, 2014.

The Boeing 777 is believed to have crashed in the Southern Indian Ocean but the jet has yet to be located despite a massive Australian-led search effort.

Malaysia Airlines said that its administrator has granted a total of 96 requests from next of kin to commence legal proceedings against the company.

“No requests have been rejected,” it said in a statement.

The company added that 42 next of kin have been given full compensation over the loss of their loved ones.
