Tim Clark says alliances are the “old way”

Emirates president Tim Clark has said alliances are now the “old way”, and that customers are looking for good value rather than mileage.

Describing recent trends as a “dismembering of the aviation world order,” Clark attributed the changes to a shift in consumer based thinking.

“There is a new breed of airlines coming through, a new breed of low cost long haul airlines” Clark said to journalists at ATM 2015 in Dubai.

“They [customers] don’t necessarily want to be in alliances, they want good value propositions, they want to be looked after.”

Clark said the new segments of the market were not predicted, but that the shift will shape the next 10 to 15 years of aviation.

“There will be those clinging to the vestiges of alliances and those that breakaway.”

Clark added that many more airlines should take the steps to focus on realignment, just as International Airlines Group (IAG) did when they joined a low-cost carrier association.

“There is a new way and you have to follow that if you’re going to survive.”
