Qantas passenger numbers take off

Qantas passenger numbers take off

The number of people flying Qantas and Jetstar has picked up, helped by a big increase in passengers on the airlines’ international routes.

More than 4.1 million passengers flew on domestic and international flights operated by Qantas and its discount carrier in March, a 1.5 per cent increase on a year ago.

Qantas international recorded a 7.6 per cent jump, to 493,000 passengers.

Jetstar international registered an even bigger 8.1 per cent increase, carrying 427,000 passengers.

However both Qantas and Jetstar domestic services carried fewer passengers, partly as a result of a slowdown in demand for flights to mines in Western Australia and Queensland.

Overall, the airline made more money on its domestic and international airfares, with yields rising during the month.

Domestic yields benefited from Cricket World Cup ticket holders flying to matches and the end of the recent price war with rival Virgin Australia.

International yields improved thanks to higher passenger loads
