Plane to train to become seamless in UK

Gatwick Airport is upgrading its train station as part of an A$2.34 million (£120.5m) spend to enhance a more seamless experience for passengers connecting from flights to rail.

The station is expected to be completed by 2020, with Gatwick signing off on work to commence from 2017, Skift reports.

The new features for the station will include doubling the size of its concourse, adding new escalators and lifts to platforms, and a simplified “intuitive” passenger flow to make it easier for travellers.

The report states Gatwick are expecting demands at the station to increase by 5 million to 20 million rail passengers a year by 2025.

“This new station builds on the ongoing transformation of Gatwick Airport and will deliver a first-class gateway for visitors, air passengers and the 1 million rail commuters who use Gatwick station every year,” Gatwick chief commercial officer, Guy Stephenson told Skift.

The upgrade comes after a number of initiatives have been launched to increase rail capacity including new Gatwick Express trains to launch in 2016, Thameslink trains by 2018, connections to Crossrail at Farringdon in 2019, new twice hourly direct connections to Peterborough, and a train to central London every 2.5 minutes by 2025, the report stated.
