Expedia has released its inaugural ‘State of the Nation’ report, which has shown Australian travellers aged 24 and under are leading the way in the future of travel, taking off earlier and travelling further away more frequently.

The study covered over 2560 Aussies aged 18 and over who have travelled in the past two years, and uncovered that the 18-24 age bracket are the group most likely to be jetsetting on domestic and international trips, with 83% already planning an overseas trip in the next 12 months.

Expedia’s managing director for Australia and New Zealand Georg Ruebensal said the younger generation are shaping the future of Australian travel, with holiday trends decreasing with each age group above 24 years.

“More than any generation before them, young Australians are seizing every opportunity to see the world, explore new destinations, enrich themselves with cultural experiences and meet locals in different lands,” Ruebensal said.

“Our data shows international air ticket prices have been declining by approximately 20% over the last three years, driven by low cost carriers and increased competition. Combine this with the rise in mobile device use, there is now more flexibility and choice than ever when planning and booking travel, and younger travellers are really taking advantage of this.”

The study also revealed that Aussies are acquiring their passports at younger ages, and getting more frequent flyer points under their belt earlier, with with 60% of families opting for big city holidays when the kids are in high school.
