Adelaide urges airport curfew review

Adelaide urges airport curfew review
By admin

Adelaide Airport has urged the Federal Government to approve an application from Cathay Pacific to land four flights a week before the 6am curfew, arguing it will open up the state to the wider Asia market.

The airport’s chief executive, Mark Young, also suggested the change of government could signal a review of the existing restrictions which ban aircraft from landing after 11pm.

Young told The Adelaide Advertiser that if Cathay was successful in its bid, it could entice other airlines to look at Adelaide more favourably.

Under regulations, the government can approve eight international flights a week an hour either side of the curfew.

“We have very clearly supported Cathay in their application, it’s a very important move by them, not just for them but for South Australia,” Young was quoted as saying. “We’re going to get same-day access to 17-plus mainland China cities. This has opened up China to SA in a way that to a point hasn’t been done before.”

Young added that many issues – such as airport curfews – are being examined to ensure Australia remains competitive and “open for business”.

“We all have to, in balance, look at things to allow the state economy to prosper,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Advertiser reported that Adelaide will launch a global search for a hotel developer to build an international class property at the airport.
