Aussies buck global travel trends

Aussies buck global travel trends

Australian travellers are far more likely to pick historical or cultural sights over a stint on the sand than their global counterparts, according to a new survey.

The Expedia Fly and Flop report found that 37% of Aussies listed sightseeing vacations focused on history and culture as their preferred holiday compared with 28% globally, with the global preference instead for beach holidays with 34%.

However, Aussies that are inclined to stretch out by the sea are more likely to head for international sands than domestic beaches, and spend between $2,001 and $3,000 on their holidays on average.

"It's not surprising that with some of the world's best beaches at our doorstep, spoilt Australians are keen for a different kind of travel experience and are choosing to explore destinations steeped in culture and history," Expedia travel expert, Amee Evans, said. "Luckily for us, the two aren't mutually exclusive."

Conveniently, the survey also revealed that Australians are also more likely to book their travel online, with the figure of 64% above the global average of 60%.
