Midweek Interview with Wolfgang Grimm, GM, Ao Nang Cliff Beach Resort, Krabi, Thailand

The challenge for the industry is… to try and entice younger employees to join by making the travel industry as an attractive fulfilling career whilst at the same time encouraging older, more experienced staff to either stay-on or rejoin after time away in a part time capacity that would suit their current lifestyle.

The things I like about my job are… the opportunities to showcase the Thai culture to our Australian guests.

And the frustrations are… mastering the Thai language with five different tone levels.

If I didn’t work in travel I would be… a diplomat.

Qantas or Virgin? Domestic -Virgin. International – Qantas.

My proudest moment was… when the InterContinental Hotel School became a campus of Southern Cross University.

The naughtiest thing I ever did was… telling Grimms Tales instead the truth.

I try to relax by… taking a long tail boat to the Andaman Sea and visit one of the many uninhabited islands’ that offer white sand beaches with turquoise waters.

The last time I feared for my life was… 30 years ago on a Pacific flight from Hong Kong to San Francisco with a one-hour sustained turbulence.

If I can, I always try to… avoid open conflict.

I really wish I had… done a better job on my schooling.

The best advice I’ve ever received was… to join InterContinental Hotels in Germany.

I don’t understand why our industry… is not embracing the environment more actively.

My greatest weakness is… to believe that all people are good.

And my greatest strength is… to teach and lead people to achieve their dreams and at the same time results to mutual benefit.

If I was prime minister I would… impress on all Members of Parliament that we conduct ourselves in a more respectful and constructive manner in question time.

If I won $1 million on the lottery I would… have had to have bought a lottery ticket first.

If I could be someone else for one day I would be… a Thai monk.

I’ve always wanted to travel to… the moon.

My favourite holiday was… in Thailand discovering the variety of street food from the North in Chiang Mai to the South in Krabi.
