Travellers ditch postcards for mobiles

Travellers ditch postcards for mobiles

Mobile technology has overtaken the postcard as the preferred method of keeping in touch with friends and family while on holiday, a new survey has revealed.

The research by travel search site Skyscanner found that only 27% of Australians are likely to put pen to paper when taking a break.

However, the figure is considerably higher than for Europeans, according to the survey. On average, just 6% of Europeans are likely to send a postcard.

Text messaging emerged as the favoured method of communication while travelling, with 60% of Aussies opting to text the folks at home. Phone calls followed close behind, used by 43% of Aussies.

Meanwhile, Facebook is gradually overtaking traditional forms of communication to take third place, with more than a third of Aussies using it to stay connected while on their travels.

Skyscanner market development manager Australia & New Zealand, Dave Boyte, confirmed that mobile technology has transformed the way people communicate.

"Mobile devices and the Internet have changed everything, not only the way we communicate but also the way we look for inspiration," he said.

"Gone are the days of trawling through endless brochures of travel agent brochures, these days most of us surf the net or turn to our favourite website."

The survey showed Australian holidaymakers check social media sites at least once a week while away, although 10% took a complete break from all forms of communication.
