The Alma Resort Cam Ranh: 30 Hectares of luxury
The Alma is a classy, five star resort in Cam Ranh, Vietnam, perfect for those seeking total relaxation, or a base for a holiday full of activity.
Our editor-at-large Nancy Hromin recently got to experience it for herself.
The Location
The Cam Ranh peninsula is a long, narrow strip of land located in the south-central coastal region of Vietnam and has a rich history. During the French colonial period, it was used as a military base and then during the Vietnam War, it was a major U.S. military installation. Today, it is home to Cam Ranh International Airport, one of the busiest in Vietnam, as well as a number of stunning beaches and resorts, including The Alma where we enjoyed a few nights in complete luxury.
The Stay
Spread out over 30 hectares, Alma resort has the scale to include a waterpark and slides, while maintaining boutique design characteristics. Suites are huge, with a number of eating options and restaurants, including a food court. There is also 12 pools to enjoy and one of our group spent a morning experiencing all of them!
If the pools aren’t enough there is also a 13-treatment room spa, a 70-seat cinema a convention centre, an amphitheatre, a science museum, a gymnasium, yoga room, 8-hole mini golf course, a youth centre with virtual reality games and a kid’s club.
Rooms
We stayed at the Ocean Front Pool Pavilion, home to sweeping views of the beach and its own private pool, terrace and sunbed. The bathroom included a bathtub and separate rainwater shower while the living room was spacious with a kitchen and dining area. Sensor-controlled air-conditioning, bluetooth televisions, ample closet space, a fridge and tea and coffee making facilities make this room choice perfect for young families.
Design
The resort was designed by a team of architects from Ong&Ong in Singapore who collaborated with Intaran Design and ARA Design. The resort blends into the natural surroundings of the peninsula, with a focus on sustainable design and environmental conservation. This is evident walking through as it has a modern, minimalist aesthetic uncensored with clean lines and natural materials such as stone and wood. One of the unique features of the Alma Resort is the use of water and greenery throughout the property, the resort also incorporates sustainable design features such as rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient lighting and a soon to be installed solar panel system.
Wellness Centre
Le Spa features 13 separate treatment villas sprinkled onto the landscape, each named after a different Vietnamese flower, as well as ‘his and hers’ saunas and steam rooms. It offers a range of treatments, including traditional Vietnamese massages, aromatherapy massages, facials, body wraps, and scrubs. Also available is yoga and meditation classes, detox programs, and fitness classes The wellness centre also has a hair and nail salon and a relaxation area where guests can unwind after their treatments. I had a number of exquisite treatments at the wellness centre and it was world class.
Located near Le Spa is the 171 square metre Fitness Gym, fully-equipped with treadmills, free weights, and resistance and cardio machines, the resort’s wellness experts also lead yoga sessions in the yoga room.
Getting there:
Jetstar flies direct to Ho Chi Minh City from Sydney with one-way fares starting from $299 at jetstar.com for travel during May – June 2023.
Jetstar’s low fares make it possible to travel to more places, more often for less.
Overall impression
Although I wouldn’t normally choose to stay in a resort of such size and scale, I was won over by its clever use of space and design that incorporates something for everyone without it losing its Vietnamese authenticity. This resort would be loved by families and groups of friends seeking a luxurious and relaxing break away with everything at their fingertips
