US-based Princess Cruises is planning to base its next new cruise liner in Shanghai year round after the ship is completed in 2017, adding to its foothold in China’s fast-growing leisure cruise market.

The company, part of Carnival Corp, the world’s number one cruise company, says that the unnamed vessel will be the first full-time luxury international liner designed and built with Chinese travellers in mind.

Princess based its first ship in China last year when it deployed its Sapphire Princess to Shanghai from June to October.

Carnival and rivals are racing to expand in China, where growth is expected to outpace developed markets even as economic growth slows.

An industry group said in March that the number of Chinese cruise passengers jumped 79 per cent from 2012 to 2014.
