How around the world fares can save money on your international holiday

Airplane flying in the sky

Travellers thinking outside of the box have scored savings recently, opting to book “around the world fares” rather than direct international tickets that are currently reaching record prices.

Rather than paying $20,000 for business class seats from Sydney to New York, adding in a trip to Europe and a stop in Asia can save over $10,000 (in business class!).

Flight Centre travel agent, Alex Zoranada, who specialises in around the world travel told The Australian that there is potential for savings when booking multi-stop global trips.

“When you’re doing return airfares with a specific airline it’s based on their availability, so if you do Singapore Airlines or Qantas return, you’re looking just at those options,” Zoranada said.

“With ’round the world, there’s a lot more airlines to work with and you can basically have a look and find the best availability on the different flights and piece it all together.”

Since the relaxation of travel restrictions in a largely post pandemic world, airlines have had far larger capacity in North America and Europe than those in the Asia Pacific region, meaning seats were more available at better prices.

According to Round About Travel agent, Mark Trim, current prices are pushing even corporate travellers to take a longer route compared to the more expensive back and forth options.

“I had a client who wanted to go to Dallas for a conference, who was looking at $19,000 return in business class,” Trim told The Australian.

“By doing a ’round-the-world trip via Dallas, the (business class) fare came down to under $8000. It’s ideal for someone who has a bit of flexibility and can return home via Europe.”

Travel agents are the best port of call when it comes to finding the right deal for travellers, especially when it involves multiple international flights.

“Agencies always add value to international bookings but in this case we add significant value,” Trim said.

“These itineraries need to be constructed manually to get the most out of these airfares and it can be a difficult thing.”
