DWC Passenger Terminal construction to begin

Dubai Airports it set to start expansions later this year, following an announcement at ATM 2015.

Paul Griffiths, ceo Dubai Airports, announced that plans to expand Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central’s existing passenger terminal have been confirmed and will begin later this year.

The passenger terminal will be expanded to accommodate for 26 million passengers by 2017. “We needed to somehow find more capacity without the space to build,” Mr Griffiths said. The latest expansion will include extensions to arrival facilities, check in, immigration and security areas.

The end product will consist of 24 boarding gates, 7 baggage reclaim carousels and 104 check-in desks.

As leading airport for passenger traffic in the world, and traffic up 7.2% from last year’s results, the new development will aim to cater for the rapid growing numbers. “We want to challenge ourselves to become again the largest airport in the world.”

The development comes as part of Dubai Airports’ strategic plan for 2020, hoping to welcome 200 million passengers per year.
