Breaking: Domestic and international flights in and out of Auckland cancelled

Two airplanes approaching for landing with beatiful stormy clouds background

Air New Zealand has confirmed it has suspended its domestic flights in and out of Auckland for the remainder of the day as Cyclone Gabrielle continues to cause chaos across New Zealand.

This is expected to affect around 55 flights.

The announcement came at the same time Auckland International Airport said all services – including international – would be suspended due to high winds.

“Ground handling operations (baggage loading/unloading) have needed to pause due to wind speed on the airfield, and the need to protect the safety of airport workers. Our apologies to anyone who is experiencing delays. Please bear with us as we manage through the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle. We’ll keep you updated,” the airport’s statement said.

Air New Zealand Chief Operational Integrity and Safety Officer Captain David Morgan says the strength and direction of winds at Auckland Airport are making it challenging to service aircraft, and it would be unsafe for our people to continue to operate in these conditions.

Air New Zealand’s restart plans may still change depending on forecast weather conditions across the next 24 hours.
