Aurora Expeditions celebrates Antarctica Day, nabs industry awards

December 01 is Antarctica Day, which Aurora Expeditions is passionate about, leading expeditions to the region for over 30 years.

Antarctica Day celebrates the signing of the Antarctic Treaty on December 01, 1959 and the setting aside of nearly 10 per cent of the Earth “forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes … in the interests of all mankind”.

Australia was one of 12 original signatories to the Treaty which has grown to 55 parties as of 2022. Aurora Expeditions was a founding member of the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO), which created the environmental protocols for all commercial visitors to Antarctica to help protect and conserve the icy continent for future generations to visit.

Alongside this, Aurora Expeditions has won five outstanding awards within the expedition cruising industry:

  • World’s Leading Polar Expedition Operator 2022 in the World Travel Awards.
  • The Silver-i Footprint Award in the Silver Travel Awards 2022 – UK.
  • Best Expedition Cruise Line in the WAVE Awards 2022 – UK.
  • Travel Weekly US Magellan Awards’ GOLD Overall Eco-Friendly “Sustainable” Cruise Ship and SILVER Overall Small Cruise Ship (under 500).

These awards reflect all the work that goes on to ensure passengers have meaningful experiences when they travel with Aurora Expedition.

Aurora Expeditions pioneers respectful expedition travel and its impact on travellers and the destination according to its CMO, Hayley Peacock-Gower.

“We are all about supporting and empowering people, communities and the places we visit, the extraordinary wildlife we encounter and the nature we connect with. And we see expedition travel as a force for good,” Peacock-Gower said.

“Thank you to our loyal expeditioners, valued trade partners, ambassadors and teams who helped us achieve these humbling accolades.”
