Emirates has begun flights from a new Dubai concourse dedicated to the carrier's flagship A380 operations.

EK003 departed yesterday for London from Concourse A, the world's first purpose-built facility for superjumbo flights.

Four of the planned 20 gates are now operational ahead of an official opening in the first quarter of the year.

It will accommodate 15 million passengers each year and flights to more than 20 A380 destinations, with Qantas also set to operate from the 11-floor concourse if its alliance with Emirates receives final approval.

"This is a historic and momentous occasion, marking another world first from Emirates," said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of the airline and of Dubai Airports. "We are confident that our customers will find the new concourse to be a remarkable world class facility befitting of our flagship A380 aircraft."

Concourse A, which forms part of Terminal 3, includes a spa and dedicated hotel floor which four and five star accommodation.

Passengers will be transported between Terminal 3 and the concourse by underground trains and shuttle buses.
